Skating since 2010 and competing since 2012, Belfast Roller Derby was the first derby league in Northern Ireland and second in the whole of Ireland. We are a competitive league, and are training to compete at a high level with other leagues across the UK, Europe, and eventually the world!
Roller derby is a fun and brilliant sport but it is also physically demanding and our training reflects that. As well as helping skaters hone their skating skills, emphasis is also placed on building endurance both on skates and off. We endeavour to deliver training that includes people of all ability levels in an enjoyable way and in a safe environment but make no mistake; this is a difficult sport and we work hard!
Our membership base is made up of people from all sorts of different backgrounds and they aren’t just skaters. We have several full-time officials, both on (referees) and off skates (NSOs) who keep the skaters in check and make things tick come game day. We also rely on a small army of volunteers to make game day happen. Although our skaters are female only, all other roles are open to men and women and we’re always looking for more!
Each member also gives their time off the track to help with the background running of the league, eg. by joining sub-committees. We also give back to the community by supporting Gay Pride, fundraising for charity and supporting other local sporting events eg. Belfast Triathlon by marshalling.
In 2012 BRD proudly became members of the UKRDA, the only member from Northern Ireland. In December 2014 we took it step further and became a WFTDA League, with the WFTDA being the global governing body. We are so excited to continue to grow, both on and off the track!
There’s a place for all kinds of skills and talents in our league. Contact us via firstname.lastname@example.org for more details on how you can get involved.
